Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are artificial replacement teeth that fill the empty spaces in your mouth left by missing teeth. When you lose teeth, your remaining teeth near the open space can drift into new positions and your gums are more vulnerable to damage. Eventually, you may lose more teeth.

An advantage of dentures is they can be easily removed for cleaning and comfortable sleeping. You’ll need to keep your mouth clean by brushing your tongue and gums, but the entire appliance can be easily cleaned outside of your mouth. They are made to fit comfortably in your mouth, but you’ll become more accustomed to them the longer you wear them.

What types of dentures are available?

There are two main types of dentures, complete and partial:

Complete dentures

Complete dentures take the place of all of your teeth, so you’ll have your remaining teeth removed before you start wearing them. You can get conventional or immediate complete dentures. Immediate dentures are made in advance so you can start wearing them right after your teeth are removed, while conventional dentures are made after your teeth are removed and are ready in eight to 12 weeks.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures contain one or several replacement teeth, but allow you to keep your remaining natural teeth if they’re still healthy. They are attached to a plastic base that is the color of your gums. Partial dentures fill the spaces in your smile and prevent your natural teeth from moving and spreading out.

Dr. Simon determines which kind of denture you need based on the state of your smile and lifestyle.

What are the benefits of getting dentures?

There are many benefits to getting dentures rather than having little or no teeth in your mouth. Benefits include:

  • Keep your remaining teeth in place
  • Prevent gum disease
  • Prevent tooth decay
  • Prevent further tooth loss
  • Retain the fullness of your face and prevent sunken cheeks
  • Improve your appearance
