Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

A veneer is a custom layer of porcelain that is placed over your tooth like a sleeve. If you have visible teeth that are damaged or decayed, veneers allow you to have a normal-looking smile while protecting your most vulnerable teeth from further damage.

Veneers can fix many imperfections in your smile. If your teeth are discolored and can’t be whitened, veneers are a safe and lasting alternative to teeth whitening with chemicals.

What are the benefits of veneers?

There are many benefits to getting veneers for your teeth. With veneers, you can enjoy:

  • Whiter teeth
  • A natural-looking smile
  • Unchipped teeth
  • Fewer or smaller gaps
  • Additional protection from acids and other damaging substances
  • Minimal preparation and upkeep

Veneers may last for up to 15 years if you take care of them properly and don’t chew on hard objects. You may need to get a mouth guard with your veneers to avoid grinding them at night. Veneers can fix the appearance of whichever feature causes you to have low confidence in your smile.

What should I expect when getting my veneers?

Before you get veneers placed onto your teeth, you’ll need to visit Dr. Simon’s office so he can evaluate your oral health. If you have gum disease, tooth decay, or need a root canal, you might not be eligible to get veneers.

After assessing your teeth, Dr. Simon slightly trims down the size of your teeth so they’ll appear natural and correctly sized with their veneers. Then, he’ll take a mold of your teeth in order to fit the veneers correctly.

At your placement appointment, Dr. Simon cleans your teeth thoroughly. Then, he creates a rough texture by treating your teeth so the veneers will stay on. Once he determines that your veneers fit and look natural, he uses dental cement to keep the veneers attached to your teeth. This final appointment lasts about two hours, so you’ll need to come at a time that’s convenient for your schedule.

If you’re tired of looking at chips, cracks, and unfixable discoloration on your teeth, veneers can allow you to enjoy your smile again. To find out if you’re a candidate, call Mark Simon, DDS, or schedule an appointment online today.
